Celebrate the town that inspired the movie “Footloose” with a trip to Elmore City’s Footloose Festival. This event commemorates the famous prom that ended the ban on dancing and inspired the community to get up and dance. The Elmore City Community Center will be transformed into the “Stairway to Heaven Cafe,” so festival participants can enjoy the menu that was served at the first prom – chicken fried steak. There will also be a pancakes breakfast and Indian taco lunch. Pull your favorite retro clothes out of your closet and enter the ’80s Outfit Contest to compete for a trophy, then make your way over to the arts and crafts vendor booths. The popular street dance will begin at 5pm in the community center, so join the original group of kids from Elmore City High School who made history, kick up your heels and dance. I was excited to hear that a new, and undoubtedly ‘cooler’ version of Footloose was coming out next year. Of course, it sounds wonderful and I have every reason to believe that it will be an enjoyable enough remake, but we’ll have to wait and see. Having come from the actual era this movie was released, not to mention living twenty minutes from where it was filmed–I think a few things need to be said. It goes without saying, that any movie that builds it’s premise around a high school dance will certainly be out dated in a few short years.
But this movie was pretty big stuff in it’s day, and still has it’s impact–whether you know it or not–on ours. Take, for instance, the music.
